Learning Objectives: -Utilize a data quality coordinator and/or a program evaluator within an EHDI program -Learn how to develop an EHDI evaluation plan -Identify ways to assess data quality and make recommendations based on data -Identify ways to integrate data from two hearing screening data systems during a transition period

Abstract:

The evaluation of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program can be quite complex, and assuring data quality and relevance at every stage is imperative in decreasing loss to follow-up and ensuring program success. In March of 2010, the Oregon EHDI program hired a data quality coordinator and a project evaluator to increase its evaluation and data reporting capacity. The evaluator and data quality coordinator have worked as a team (the ‘evaluation team’) to develop an evaluation plan, assess and make recommendations regarding data quality at each stage of data collection, and to create custom data reports. They have also been an integral part of the transition to and implementation of Oregon’s new hearing screening module, which was introduced in July of 2010. The presentation will include overall information about Oregon’s evaluation team model, including the roles of each person. It will also include information regarding the team’s assessment of data quality at each milestone (i.e. 1,3,6) and the recommendations and custom reports that stemmed from the assessment. The presenter will also discuss the role of the evaluation team in the implementation of the new hearing screening data system, including their recommendations for data capture, their role in the transition process, and how they worked to integrate data from the outgoing and new data systems.

Kristen Becker - Oregon EHDI
Credentials: Master of Science (MS) in Nutrition, Master of Public Health (MPH), Bachelor of Science in Biology
Ms. Becker has nine years of experience as a program evaluator for health and education related programs. She began her role as a Research Analyst within the Oregon Public Health Division in March 2010, and she has served as the EHDI program evaluator since that time. Prior to working for the State of Oregon, Ms. Becker worked for Pacific Research and Evaluation and the Oregon Center for Applied Science conducting program evaluations, primarily for school districts, non-profit agencies, and government agencies. Her experience includes the evaluation of complex, multi-year projects, and she believes that strong collaboration is essential in successful program evaluation. She has a Master of Public Health and Master of Science degrees from Tufts University.
Meuy Swafford - Oregon EHDI
     Credentials: BA
Meuy Swafford works in the Maternal and Child Health Section of the Center for Prevention and Health Promotion at the Oregon Health Authority as the EHDI Data Quality Coordinator. She has worked with the EHDI Program for 5 years in that capacity, and has been with the Oregon Health Authority for 10 years.
