Abstract:

Timely early intervention for infants with hearing loss maximizes the potential for successful speech, language, literacy and academic outcomes. Family training and practice in decision-making strategies can facilitate the intervention process and reduce intervention delays. The goal of this project was to develop and evaluate a DVD prototype demo program to help parents develop and practice essential decision making skills related to communication, technology, and education options. The DVD program, called Infant Hearing Decisions: An EHDI Tool for Families, uses an innovative approach for shared learning among extended family members. The majority of the content is delivered via parent testimony regarding their experiences. Extensive efforts were made to represent diverse backgrounds and cultures. The prototype consists of the introduction and two modules: (a) Decision Making and (b) Technology. This tool has been evaluated for usability and functionality. In addition, the feasibility of this approach for use with families of children with hearing loss has been evaluated using pre- and post-intervention measures. Data supports this approach to facilitated decision making via guided practice using relevant content. This innovative approach has broad applications to other health education and health promotion activities. Plans to seek funding for Phase II development of Infant Hearing Decisions: An EHDI Tool for Families has been initiated.       Nannette Nicholson, PhD is a Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences/University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She also has a clinical staff appointment at Arkansas Children's Hospital. Her primary research area is early intervention and pediatric audiology.

      BIO: Patti Martin, Ph.D., is the Director of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH). Her areas of expertise include infant screening/assessment, family support and program development. Her efforts with infant hearing screening began with a collaboration project to investigate the efficacy of TEOAEs as a newborn screening tool in the early 1990s and continue through her work on the board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Special Interest Division on Childhood Hearing Disorders and as the Family Support Consultant for NCHAM. She has chaired the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Speech Pathology and Audiology, the Arkansas Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, Tracking and Intervention Boardand the Natinoal Investing in Family Support Conference for the past four years. Dr. Martin’s ongoing passion centers around how professionals can help support families in improving the outcomes of children with hearing loss.

      BIO: David Weekley is an Instructor at UALR. He has over 25 years of experience in almost every phase of video production; eight years in Australia producing corporate videos for Kodak, Builders Bargain Centre, Reliv Australia, and Sigma Data; in the U.S. he has worked for FOX News, ESPN, Court TV, and Thomas Films, as well as Ron Sherman Teleproductions in Little Rock.
