Abstract:

Health information technology interoperability standards focus on exchanging information to improve care. EHDI is at the center of standards development because it is a first encounter between private health care and public health. Standards tools have been successfully tested for EHDI. EHDI programs can take advantage of this knowledge to implement these new communication standards to facilitate electronic exchange of information. OZ Systems can assist programs in standards implementation at the hospital, public health and community level. At the hospital, messaging tools use a prescribed format, such as HL7 to allow public health to receive a notification of a birth. Hearing screening results are captured and transmitted directly from the screening equipment to the EHDI program, providing the beginning of a comprehensive child hearing health record. Our tools help EHDI programs create and transmit an early hearing care plan (EHCP) to each baby’s authorized medical home based on your state guidelines and using information acquired from the hospital and screening equipment. The EHCP provides the medical home with information to review hearing screening results, assess risk factors for hearing loss and make appropriate referrals. Once the medical home has completed assessment, this information can be communicated back to public health and to the child’s personal health record if available. OZ Systems is the public health vendor with the experience to help you implement HIT standards for your EHDI program, ultimately ensuring every child receives necessary care.
