ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Using Quality Improvement Methodology to Improve EHDI Systems '
Track: 9 - Program Evaluation and Quality Improvement
Keyword(s): quality improvement, lost to follow-up, lost to documentation
Learning Objectives:
  1. Participants will understand how quality improvement methodology can be used to improve state EHDI systems
  2. Participants will learn how a Collaborative model with proven success in improving systems was successfully adapted to state EHDI systems, as well as the unique challenges
  3. Participants will learn where they can access the tools and strategies tested and adapted by the Collaborative states, for use in their EHDI systems

Abstract:

Since 2005, the National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) in collaboration with the Maternal Child Health Bureau (MCHB) and National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM), have implemented four learning collaboratives to improve state performance in the 1-3-6 goals, reduce loss to follow-up, and strengthen systems and relationships between stakeholders. The collaboratives utilize the Breakthrough Series Collaborative (Learning Model) as a framework for state teams to use quality improvement methodology (the Model for Improvement) to test ideas on a small scale, eventually implementing successful ideas on a larger scale. Through the collaborative framework, teams learn from each others’ successes and failures. To date, most states/territories have completed or are currently part of a collaborative. This presentation will give a background understanding of quality improvement methods that can be applied to state EHDI programs, using the Model for Improvement and the Collaborative model. How these adaptable models have been applied to state EHDI systems will be discussed, including the impact of the rarity of hearing loss on the use of the model, and training providers to use small tests of change. Specific successes and challenges of using this approach will be discussed. Lastly, participants will learn where they can access the tools and strategies tested and adapted by the Collaborative states, for use in their EHDI systems.
