Title: 'Speech perception in preschool children: Practice and performance '
Track: 2 - Audiological Services
Keyword(s): speech perception, preschool,
Learning Objectives:
  1. Participants will be able to identify commonly given speech perception measures for preschool children.
  2. Participants will describe advantages of using open-set speech perception tests as a way to monitor progress of preschool children.
  3. Participants will be able to summarize how speech perception measures can be used for cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Abstract:

Speech perception testing is a common way to measure performance of children with hearing loss. As more children are identified with hearing loss at younger ages, there are a variety of speech perception options for audiologists. Yet, to date, there are few studies examining current practices and providing rationale for how speech perception tests can be used effectively with preschool populations. Given the various factors that influence speech perception testing in young children, a survey was completed to better understand what factors audiologists consider when making decisions about performing aided speech perception measures for children age 3 to 6 years who have hearing loss (Muñoz, Blaiser, & White, submitted). With advancements in early identification of hearing loss, it is important that speech-language pathologists and audiologists develop a deeper understanding of the factors that influence speech perception skills of preschool children. Greater understanding can guide professionals in communication disorders and enhance their ability to work together to identify challenges and monitor progress. While research on the development and change in speech perception skills in children with hearing impairment is extensive there is limited research examining speech perception skills in preschoolers over time. This presentation will provide results from 1) a recent survey of audiologists’ (n= 145) speech perception testing practices with preschool children (Muñoz, Blaiser, & White, submitted), and 2) a longitudinal study of performance of preschool children (n=16) with hearing loss on the Phonetically Balanced Kindergarten (PBK) word lists and variables that influence performance (Blaiser, Muñoz, & White, in prep).
