ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Racial Disparities in Infant Hearing Loss in Mississippi'
Track: 1 - EHDI Program Enhancement
Keyword(s): Confirmed Hearing Loss, Racial Disparities
Learning Objectives:
  1. To demonstrate racial disparities of newborn hearing loss between black and white newborns in MS.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the confirmed hearing loss rate between black newborns and white newborns to improve the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program in Mississippi. Data used in this study was from the Mississippi’s Early Hearing Database and the Mississippi Department of Health’s Vital Statistics Department. From 2004 to 2011, the confirmed hearing loss rate for black newborns was 1.39 per 1000 with a confidence interval of 1.21 to 1.59 per 1000, compared to 0.47 for white newborns with a confidence interval of 0.37 to 0.58 per 1000. The birth population of other races is very small in MS. Those numbers were not included in this study. On average, the hearing loss rate of black newborns was higher than the hearing loss rate of white newborns. Analysis of the early hearing loss data underscores the needs for extensive training and services among the black communities regarding the importance of prenatal health-care and follow-up care with a medical home provider.
