ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'Untapped Opportunities for EHDI Professionals'
Track: 7 - Family Perspectives and Support
Keyword(s): socio-emotional, deaf culture, role models
Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify areas where professionals can make additional recommendations to parents
  2. Recognize factors, other than technology, that contribute to the socio-emotional development of children who are deaf and hard of hearing

Abstract:

A growing number of oral deaf children are currently attending deaf universities. This is an indication of the role that deafness plays in their identity. An examination of this age group, which is far-removed from EHDI, introduces the possibility that EHDI has a role not only in language development, but socio-emotional development as well. A growing body of evidence reveals that students who are raised in the oral method continue to express interest in deaf institutions. For this reason, EHDI professionals play an important role in informing families not only of the full range of communications options and choices but also of the opportunities that accompany those communication options: contact with oral deaf adults who use CI and Deaf adults who use ASL as role models; interaction with peers who use the same communication mode; social events that are fully accessible. This presentation will promote awareness of Deaf culture among professionals serving families with young children with the premise that the more comfortable those professionals are with deaf people, the more comfortable those professionals will be with the families they serve.
