Abstract:

Families, educators and early intervention providers of deaf and hard hearing children are often separated into their silos of language and communication modes as well as teaching strategies. Club Saturday is an innovative program that brings school districts, early intervention specialists and the community together. Hearing and deaf parents with deaf and hard of hearing children often need to search for events that are communication accessible and family oriented. Club Saturday is that place. Deaf Counseling Advocacy Referral Agency (DCARA) ’s Family Connections provide a monthly thematic Club Saturday event for families with deaf, hard of hearing, deaf blind children as well as kids of deaf adults(KODA). The Club Saturday model is an ideal collaboration with school districts, deaf and hard of hearing programs and early intervention programs. The staff and volunteers are language models to children , parents and professionals as well. The concept of Club Saturday promotes bonding, supports language development and fosters positive deaf identities and social/emotional well beings. The presenter will incorporate testimonials from families and professionals as well as videos of the Club Saturday events into the power point presentation.
