Abstract:

Guiding paraprofessionals and parents in LSL Preschool Classroom Strategies helps support the development and improvement of language and listening skills in children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Because children who are DHH can be eligible for special education services under IDEA, there are many paraprofessionals, school support staff, and parents that interact with the child throughout their day. While every communication exchange can be utilized as a listening and language opportunity, more training is necessary to help parents and paraprofessionals become well educated in the understanding and use of listening strategies in the classroom setting. It is the responsibility of early childhood educators to provide a comfortable learning environment that promotes listening and language skills implemented by other educators, paraprofessionals and parents.
