Title: 'A California Resource Guide for Parents'

Abstract:
In September 2011, the California Department of Education convened a group of 14 parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing to develop a 'by parents for parents' resource guide. The purpose of the guide is to provide parents of young deaf and hard of hearing children with comprehensive and balanced information about all of the resources that are available to them. The development of the guide came about partly because the Department felt there was a lack of uniform information for parents in our state, but also because of the following agreement between the California Stakeholders for American Sign Language and English (CALSAE) and the California Coalition of Option Schools (CCOS) and the Center for Early Intervention on Deafness (CEID): “CALSAE and CCOS/CEID agree to work together with current government entities – the California Department of Health Care Services and the California Department of Education -- to expand and improve existing information packets and the process of a standardized distribution of those packets to every family with newly identified children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The contents of these packets will include unbiased and balanced information regarding language acquisition of American Sign Language/English (reading, writing, and spoken) and standardized lists of information, including local resources. The purpose of the informational packets is to help parents to prepare their children who are deaf and hard of hearing to attain Kindergarten-readiness.” The guide, which is expected to be published by Janaury, will contain sections on 'My Baby is Deaf or Hard of Hearing - Who Can Help?', 'Language Opportunities, Communication Tools, and Educational Philosophies', 'Steps Toward Kindergarten Readiness', 'Community Connections', and more than 20 pages of resources, including local, state, and national organizations, books, camps,and web sites that parents can explore and learn from.

      Nancy Grosz Sager is the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs Consultant for the California Department of Education. In this role, she works with the California Newborn Hearing Screening Program, to ensure that all infants identified through the program are referred To Early Start (IDEA Part C services). Previously, she was a teacher of the deaf and a special education principal for the Sutter County Office of Education. She is a past president of the California Educators of the Deaf. Currently, she serves on the Board of the Conference of American Instructors of the Deaf.
