Title: 'User Friendliness of EHDI Parent Information Materials'
Track: 9 - Program Evaluation and Quality Improvement
Keyword(s): health literacy, user-friendliness
Learning Objectives:
  1. 1. Describe characteristics of written information that contribute to perceived usability
  2. 2. Provide examples of parent and professional perceptions of usability of state EHDI brochures
  3. 3. Make suggestions to improve parent perception of usability of EHDI information

Abstract:

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs are focused on meeting the 1-3-6 guidelines popularized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2003) (Screening by 1 month, Diagnosis by 3 months, Intervention by 6 months). As part of this effort, all state EHDI programs have print brochures developed for parents to take home following the birth hearing screening procedure. However, according to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL, 2003), approximately 14% of U.S. adults possess skills in the lowest level of document literacy (below basic literacy), and 22% are at the lowest level for quantitative literacy. According to this report, when individuals with basic and below basic skills are combined, it is estimated that as many as 34% to 55% of U.S. adults may have limited literacy skills. It is possible that some of these adults may be parents of children with congenital hearing loss identified by newborn hearing screening. For these reasons, it is important that we consider and evaluate the characteristics of user-friendliness for current EHDI brochures in an effort to provide access of information to individuals who may have limited literacy skills. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perception of user-friendliness by assessing six characteristics of 50 state EHDI brochures by four groups of stakeholders (parents, EHDI professionals, non-EHDI professionals, and students). This presentation includes practical information and definitions of each of the characteristics. Data from this study supports future research into characteristics of EHDI brochures that contribute to the perceived user-friendliness of these materials.
