Abstract:

The EAR Foundation of Arizona (EFAz) is a not for profit organization that works closely with the Arizona Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program. The EFAz HEAR for Kids program has worked with community audiologists to ensure that families have access to loaner hearing aids, permanent aids and vouchers to pay for hearing assessment for families in financial need. Recently, the EFAz expanded the HEAR for Kids program to provide vouchers for newborn hearing screening in partnership with a company that provides outsourced screening for hospitals. Grants and fundraising provides payment for screening for low income families that either do not have insurance or have a high deductible plan. Data will be presented that shows the income and insurance characteristics of the population using the vouchers and the impact on families choosing to refuse the screening. This presentation will demonstrate the impact of a minimal investment in addressing a growing issue.
