Once learning that their child has a hearing loss, parents are asked, almost immediately, to become the expert. This vast new world can be very overwhelming. Their world is now filled with a variety of specialist, medical terminology, and an astonishing array of supportive groups and resources.
This presentation will offer professionals a look at the journey a parent takes from initial diagnosis through the development of the initial IFSP through real life experiences. It will also, provide families a roadmap to follow as they learn about the varied supports available and develop a system to use when managing services, dealing with conflicting information, and ensuring that the programs they are enrolled in are the right fit for their family’s needs.
Specific attention will be given to the moment when parents are asked to select a communication modality and additional strategies will be provided to decrease the stressors during this time and to effectively increase communicative skills from a holistic approach.
Key words: early intervention process, resources, communication modality
