Abstract:

Newborn Hearing Screening has been implemented throughout Florida. However, over 30% of children referred are being lost to follow-up. This means that there are children who may be missing out on the early intervention services they need to begin closing gaps with hearing peers at an early age. These children may also be compromising early brain development because they are not accessing spoken language. Using a combination of private grant funding and an existing network of publicly funded early identification and intervention professionals along with professionals in private practice, Clarke has begun a program of outreach and education to increase community awareness about Listening and Spoken Language opportunities and to provide families of young children with an opportunity to participate in free, center-based activity and coaching sessions. This presentation will outline the procedure for providing information to professionals and for tracking their pre and post presentation knowledge about the availability of intervention services in the Listening and Spoken Language community. It will report on the success of enrolling families in center-based programs. This presentation will also look at barriers to education and implementation and provide suggestions on how to eliminate these barriers and provide better services to children and families.

      Cynthia S. Robinson M.Ed., CED, LSLS Cert. AVEd is a teacher and Co-Director at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech where she has been for 15 years. She is the author of The Mainstream Assessment of Readiness for Children Over Five. She has presented on the issues involved in successful mainstreaming both nationally and internationally. She has over 30 years experience teaching deaf children to listen and talk in three states. She has been working with children with cochlear implants for more than 15 years in self-contained classrooms, resource rooms and in the mainstream.

      Alisa Demico, M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist and Co-Director at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech. She has enjoyed providing services to the children and their families at Clarke Jacksonville for 15 years. Alisa works primarily with children and their families in the early intervention and preschool program. Alisa is the co-author of the Picture Perfect Preschool. She received her BA and Master’s Degree from West Virginia University.
