ABSTRACT INFORMATION
Title: 'What to Expect for a Child's Auditory Development' Track: 3 - Language Acquisition and Development Keyword(s): auditory development, milestones, expectations, goals Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to create a sequential therapy plan to develop a child's auditory skills (receptive language). Participants will be able to identify the level of auditory skills a child has developed and then be able to determine if these skills are being acquired at an appropriate rate. Participants will be able to list at least three tools that may be used to monitor a child's auditory development. Abstract: Children who have hearing loss and receive hearing aids and/or cochlear implants require auditory training to ensure that they develop listening skills to the best of their potential. In order to make sure that this skill development is progressing appropriately, professionals need to be aware of the auditory hierarchy of skills and timelines of expectation for acquisition of these skills. This presentation will review a hierarchy of auditory skills along with identification of specific goals that facilitate mastery of auditory skills and may be used for monitoring progress of auditory development. There are many tools available that detail the auditory hierarchy. Several of these will be discussed and modeled. Along with an understanding of auditory development, professionals must also be informed about the length of time it would be expected for a child to develop particular auditory skills. It is important to be able to monitor a child’s auditory progress to determine if he/she is on track for developing skills to his/her potential. This presentation will identify milestone markers that may be used to monitor acquisition of a child’s auditory skills. The first part of the presentation will be lecture. It will conclude with participants being broken into smaller groups and provided with case studies. They will have the opportunity to use the tools discussed to determine where their particular case study is at in terms of auditory development, if the case study is making appropriate progress, what would be appropriate goals to work on and what goals should be written. Using the information from this presentation, the participants will be able to 1.) understand the auditory hierarchy of development, 2.) monitor acquisition of auditory skills, and 3.) develop IEP goals and short and long term objectives for use in the classroom, during therapy and in the home. AVT       MaryKay Therres is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Auditory-Verbal Therapist with over 20 years of experience working with children who have hearing loss. She had worked at Children’s Hospital & Research Center, Oakland for 13 years, previously as a member of the cochlear implant team and Management Coordinator of the Speech/Language Center and more recently as the Educator, Researcher & Outreach Liaison for CI. She was a Clinical Specialist on The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia cochlear implant team. She is currently the Manager of Education and Therapy for MED-EL. She co-authored AuSpLan: A Manual for Professionals Working with Children who have a Cochlear Implant or Amplification. She co-developed and co-instructed the Professional Preparation in Cochlear Implants program. She has presented nationally and internationally. Virgi Mills - Co-Presenter MED-EL      Credentials: M.E.D.       Virgi Mills, is a Florida certified Educator and a bilateral MED-EL user who taught Pre-K children in auditory-oral programs for two years in the Alachua County Public Schools, Gainesville, FL and two years in the Duval county Public Schools, Jacksonville, FL. She is a board member of the Florida AG Bell chapter. Currently, Virgi is an Outreach Manager for MED-EL in the southeast region and counsels families in the cochlear implant journey. Virgi has presented at the Florida Summit on Early Childhood Hearing Loss, national and local Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) conferences and chapter meetings as well as college-level audiology classes.
