Title: 'Simulated Deaf Mentor Program Session'

Abstract:

In this day-long instructional session, three goals are: 1. What is the Deaf Mentor Program (research citations, history, curriculum, training components and home visit framework) 2. Simulated Deaf Mentor Home Visit (mock home visit sessions will be performed with participants as either family members or observers). 3. How can you set up a DMP in your state (or region). This instructional session supports the JCIH 2013 Supplement that states that new identified families are provided full range of services, including the Deaf Adult support and community. Researches also state that new families who have met Deaf adults increase their coping strategies due to the additional new skills from the Deaf adults and the community.

      Jodee Crace has a Master's in School Counseling with Deaf Students and has been in the Human Development career for 27 years ranging most of the life span from community-based mental health service to Early Education and Family Support service. Currently she is a Deaf Mentor in Indiana and co-teaches with The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants, Toddlers and their Families: Collaboration and Leadership Interdisciplinary Certificate Program. She is actively involved with the American Society for Deaf Children board and the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing.

Paula Pittman - Co-Presenter

     Other Affiliations: Director, Utah Parent Infant Program, Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind
      Paula Pittman has been involved in the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families for 30 years. She was one of the developers of the original Deaf Mentor Program at the SKI-HI Institute and is the director of outreach for the SKI-HI and Deaf Mentor Programs. She is currently the director of the Utah Parent Infant Program at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind and serves families in that program as a Parent Advisor as well.

      I grew up bilingual. I graduated from Gallaudet University.then I graduated with a Master's Degree from University of California at Santa Barbara. Currently I am PhD student. Former Teacher of the Deaf. Currently the Deaf Mentor Program Coordinator at New Mexico School for the Deaf. Also a proud Deaf mom of two bilingual Deaf children.

Danelle Gournaris - Co-Presenter
Lifetrack

      Danelle has been at Lifetrack since 2012 as Deaf Family Mentor Program Coordinator. The Deaf Mentor Family Program at Lifetrack, based in St. Paul, Minnesota is a statewide program that provides Deaf Mentor and Language Role Model to hearing families with deaf and hard of hearing children. Danelle currently supervises 23 Deaf Mentors with approximately 100 families served since 2012. Prior to Lifetrack, she was a family counselor at a school district for one year and a deaf mentor for seven years. In 2000, Danelle earned her Masters of Arts in School Counseling from and her Masters of Science in Administration from Gallaudet University. She is also a Certified Deaf Mentor Trainer. Danelle currently serves as a board member for the Metro Deaf School, a deaf charter school in St. Paul, Minnesota.
