Title: 'Lessons from Hearing Parents with Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children'

Abstract:

In each generation, since the beginning of the early intervention movement, hearing parents of Deaf or Hard of Hearing children have shared their experiences. There is a common thread in the lessons gained while raising a Deaf or Hard of Hearing child. Through this workshop we will explore the wealth of wisdom held by parents who have experienced and assessed their journey with their Deaf or Hard of Hearing child. For most families their Deaf/HH child is the first Deaf/HH person they have met. Families experience the phenomenon of being bombarded with new information while simultaneously grieving their child’s hearing status. It is often only after raising their child, can parents decipher the mind boggling choices they made and the wisdom they have gained. Let’s share and discuss the 20/20 hindsight of families with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children with other families and professionals.

      Julie Rems-Smario, M.A., M.S.: After graduating from California State University, Northridge, Julie joined California School for the Deaf (CSD) as early childhood educator. After receiving her MS in Counseling, Julie joined the first national training held by Abused Deaf Women Advocacy Services and founded DeafHope as the executive director. In 2010, she returned to CSD as an Educational Consultant working with families and school's media. Her work has been recognized with several awards such as CNN Heroes and E-Women Network International Humanitarian Award.
