Abstract: |
Making sure that babies who do not pass their hearing screening receive a recommended follow-up screen is key part in identifying hearing loss early. However, for some families, it may be difficult to return for a follow-up screening, especially if the family’s first language is not English. In these cases, they may not understand the purpose of the first hearing screening or why they need to return for another screening. This has been an issue for EHDI programs in California and other states that routinely work with Spanish-speaking families. To help states address this follow-up issue, the EHDI Diversity Committee, acting on a suggestion from the California Newborn Hearing Screening Program, developed a new video called “Que tan bien oye su hijo? Lo que los padres deben saber” (How well can your child hear? What parents need to know). In this culturally appropriate Spanish-language video, Latino families describe their real-life experiences when they were told that their baby did not pass the hearing screening and what they did next. Their stories provide real world examples and encouragement that help other Latino parents seek out the follow-up services their baby needs. As part of this presentation, the development of this video will be discussed, along with ways this video can be effectively used to help address loss to follow-up among Latino families. |
