Title: 'Building Self-Advocacy and Repair Strategies during the Early Years' Track: 3 - Language Acquisition and Development Keyword(s): self-advocacy, repair strategies, early, coaching Learning Objectives: Describe self-advocacy in relationship to early intervention and preschool Name at least 3 strategies that support a young child's development of self-advocacy and repair strategies. Identify coaching opportunities that occur when working with families. Abstract: The importance of self-advocacy skills and communication repair strategies has gained attention in work with children and families impacted by hearing loss. The AG Bell Family Needs Assessment '...noted the need, particularly in younger children, to develop self-advocacy skills... (http://www.agbell.org/FamilyNeedsAssessment.aspx?id=2224)' This presentation will describe how Listen and Talk integrates self-advocacy and repair strategies into existing routines and uses coaching strategies to build these important skills for young children and their families. Participants will discuss elements of self-advocacy and repair strategies, the development sequence for these skills and ways to assess and monitor progress. Examples of IFSP outcomes and IEP goals will be shared in addition to viewing examples of opportunities and strategies. The presentation will emphasize how common practices can build the foundation for self-advocacy and repair strategies. Kimberly Hamren - Co-Presenter Listen and Talk      Credentials: M. ED, CED, LSLS Cert. AVT      Other Affiliations: Alexander Graham Bell Association, Hands and Voices and CEC.       Kim Hamren is the Early Intervention Coordinator at Listen and Talk in Seattle, WA. Kim leads a team of 8 Early Intervention providers including Teachers of the Deaf, Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists. She has worked at Listen and Talk since 1997 in a variety of positions including as an early intervention provider, preschool teacher, Listening and Spoken Language Auditory-Verbal Therapist, and preschool coordinator. She received her Teacher of the Deaf certification and her B.S. in Education from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1980 and her M.Ed in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1992. She holds her BA in Deaf Education from Fontbonne University and her MA in Early Childhood Education from the University of Texas, San Antonio. Maura is also a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist- Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. As Educational Director she has provided early intervention, Auditory-Verbal Therapy, and educational consultations.
