Title: 'Literacy Strategies: Considerations for Both an Auditory and a Visual Environment' Track: 3 - Language Acquisition and Development Keyword(s): literacy, sign language, spoken language Learning Objectives: 1. At the end of the session, the learner will be able to list strategies to encourage literacy development. 2. At the end of the session, the learner will be able to apply the strategies in both an auditory and a visual environment. Abstract: Literacy can be a challenging component for children who are deaf/hard of hearing. There are a variety of strategies we can use with young children regardless of the type of communication chosen by the family to help them develop the literacy skills they need for the future. However, based on the communication decisions of the family, there are certain auditory and visual considerations for applying the literacy strategies in order to maximize the child’s learning. By looking at these strategies from both an auditory and visual standpoint, it allows the service provider to easily model and support the families as they incorporate literacy into their daily routines. This session will take just a few of the strategies that are important for helping children develop literacy skills and highlight through video clips how these strategies could be incorporated in both an auditory and a visual environment. Erin Schuweiler - POC,Co-Presenter Kansas School for the Deaf      Credentials: M.S., Ed.      Other Affiliations: Sound START of Kansas       Erin Schuweiler is the Birth to Three Coordinator at the Kansas State School for the Deaf (KSD). Erin has worked at KSD for 10 years, 2 years as a preschool teacher and 8 years in birth to three. Erin provides services and resources to service providers and families who have children ages birth to three who are deaf and hard of hearing throughout the state of Kansas. Erin graduated from the University of Kansas with a master’s degree in Early Childhood Deaf Education and Early Childhood Special Education.       ASHA DISCLOSURE: Financial - Nonfinancial - Stefanie Spencer - Co-Presenter St. Joseph Insitute for the Deaf      Credentials: M.S., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert AVT      Other Affiliations: Sound START of Kansas       Stefanie currently provides home-based auditory-verbal speech, language, and listening therapy for early intervention families and also leads the Parent Playgroup at the St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf-Kansas City. Stefanie holds a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology with an emphasis in Deafness from Fontbonne University. She is licensed as a speech-language pathologist in both Kansas and Missouri and is a LSLS Certified Auditory Verbal Therapist. Stefanie is also a member of the Sound START Advisory Committee which has developed a statewide initiative to provide unbiased and comprehensive services to children ages birth to three who are deaf and hard of hearing.       ASHA DISCLOSURE: Financial - Nonfinancial -
