Abstract: |
This presentation will outline treatment components for typical children awaiting cochlear implantation and following activation who were implanted at or prior to 12 months of age. Emphasis will be placed on laying the foundation for listening for the first and second years following cochlear implant activation. An overview of long term therapy goals, short term objectives, treatment strategies, and activities used within treatment sessions for infants and toddlers will be shared. Lesson plan ideas will demonstrate fun ways to build auditory skills for beginning listeners. The early lesson plans with objectives will be expanded to include demonstration of activities which target appropriate goals for a child approaching
three years of age. Videotaped examples of treatment sessions with many developing listeners will be presented. Outcomes of successful intervention for young children with cochlear implants will be discussed.
