Abstract: |
The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) (2007) recommends hearing aid fitting within one month of hearing loss confirmation, and infants are more frequently being fitted with hearing aids prior to six months of age (Muñoz, Blaiser, & Barwick, 2013). Early amplification and consistent use of appropriately programmed hearing aids are critical for spoken language development (Moeller et al., 2010). However, achieving effective daily management that supports consistent hearing aid use can be difficult for parents. The Parent Hearing Aid Management Inventory (PHAMI), a parent-report questionnaire, was developed to learn more about parent experiences and factors influencing hearing aid management for children birth to three years of age (Muñoz et al., in press). Further research was done with parents of children 0-3 years in seven states (N = 398) to learn more about parent education and support needs. Primary caregivers of children with bilateral hearing loss who are using hearing aids competed the PHAMI as well as a depression screening. The results of this study will be presented and discussed. |
