Title: 'Research from Scratch – A Recipe to Develop the Framework for Problem-Based Research for Novices' Track: 9 - Program Evaluation and Quality Improvement Keyword(s): research methodology, improvement, data, change Learning Objectives: Describe the different types of research data (achievement, demographic, perception and process) Formulate a research question or testable hypothesis Develop a plan for data collection and analysis Abstract: A well-articulated, research-worthy problem statement or question is the main ingredient for any viable research. This presentation will help novice researchers develop a recipe to answer their supposition by using a statement or query as the starting point to develop a research project. We will discuss the fundamental ingredients in a research plan: identifying the different types of research data, designing a problem statement or question, choosing appropriate methodology and methods, collecting and analyzing data, and summarizing conclusions. The theoretical foundation will be placed into practice by examining the structure of a current research project being implemented in the state of Washington tracking children between ages 3 and 5 who are not participating in specialized educational programs to determine if they are experiencing regression in communication development. We will complete the presentation by proposing a template for crafting an effective research project proposal. She has been providing early childhood education services in and around Washington State for the past 12 years through the Washington School for the Deaf Outreach Team. Her focus is on developing collaborative relationships in underserved areas, providing training/information to early intervention coordinators and providers, and finding funding to help expand statewide services for children and families.
