Virtual Technology, Not Just for Home Visits Anymore
Over the past 4 years the team at Listen and Talk has provided virtual home visits for more than 45 families. Along the way we have explored many ways to give families access to services and expertise through virtual technology in addition to virtual home visits. To provide timely, thorough services and work collaboratively with various agencies over great distances virtual technology is used to build a strong team for families. As more and more infants and toddlers are identified through newborn screening, provider caseloads and responsibilities have multiplied. Consequently scheduling meetings to collaborate with various agencies and/or team members can be extremely challenging. Virtual technology can be utilized as an option to connect families and providers from various agencies to keep in close collaboration. Some examples include participating in IFSP meetings, referral visits, transition meetings, and inclusion of vision, physical and occupational therapists, etc. Virtual sessions support the staff in professional development through implementing peer mentoring, collaboration with team supervisors and staff evaluations. Additionally, Spanish interpretation is provided virtually for home visits and meetings by a Listen and Talk certified interpreter. The Early Intervention team continues to explore how virtual technology can improve and expand the services provided for families, colleagues and community partners. This presentation will share; benefits for expanded use of virtual technology and address challenges encountered, video clips, feedback from team participants, scenarios for application and opportunities to network and share ideas as a group.

Kim Hamren is the Early Intervention Coordinator at Listen and Talk in Seattle, WA. Kim leads a team of 8 Early Intervention providers including Teachers of the Deaf, Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists. She has worked at Listen and Talk since 1997 in a variety of positions including as an early intervention provider, preschool teacher, Listening and Spoken Language Auditory-Verbal Therapist, and preschool coordinator. She received her Teacher of the Deaf certification and her B.S. in Education from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1980 and her M.Ed in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1992. She became a Certified Listening and Spoken Language Auditory-Verbal Therapist in 2003.
