SibShops=Providing Support and Safe Expression for Siblings

This session will introduce the SibShop Model peer support for children who have a brother or sister with special needs. We will spend some time discussing the unique joys and challenges living with a brother or sister with special needs often brings, look at how the SibShop model is structured and learn how to begin the process of starting a SibShop in your community. Participants will explore components of this extremely popular, high energy peer support model including specific techniques used to encourage communication and problem solving.

  • Understand the value of sibshop and sibling support.
  • The next steps in developing a sibshop in your community.

Jenny is the mother of 2 children, the oldest of her 2 children is a son who has bilateral hearing loss. Jenny has worked for the Tennessee Disability Coalition as a NBH parent consultant and is now a parent guide with TN Guide By Your Side. Jenny is the treasurer and membership coordinator for TN Hands & Voices. She is also the SibShop Facilitator in West TN. Her passion is advocacy, insuring that d/hh children's unique needs are met in rural educational settings.

Tonya Bowman is a wife and mother of 3. Her oldest child, a daughter, has bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. She has worked for Family Voices of TN for a long time as Family Resource Specialist as well as a NBH Parent Consultant. She is now a parent guide for TN Guide By Your Side. Her son has benefited from being a part of sibshop. Tonya wants every d/hh child/family to receive the support and services they need.
