Birth to Three: Building a Comprehensive Program for Families of Children with Hearing Loss

Children with hearing loss have shown increased success when early identification is paired with early interventions and where families are actively involved. Families who choose a listening and spoken language outcome and who receive more comprehensive, timely and earlier education exhibit improved outcomes. The needs of the child and parent change throughout the infant and toddler stages whereby requiring continued family support and education. Effective intervention requires guidance for families and the child throughout this time. It is crucial that families are vested in services to maximize potential outcomes. Interventionists attempting to achieve a family-centered approach need to go beyond traditional practices. In order to provide comprehensive services, optimally, a variety of options should be made available. The STARS program currently offers options beyond traditional early intervention services including: a weekly mommy and me infant group, biweekly toddler groups, a weekly parent support group, a weekly hospital based family group and parent education programs driven by parent requested topics. During this presentation, participants will be provided with outlines, guidelines, demonstrations and suggested topics to enable the participants to enhance their Parent, Infant and Toddler programs. Participants will be provided with sample lesson plans, photos/video clips, lists of topics and programmatic information. The take away information will be pragmatic and relevant allowing participants to use the information in their practice.

  • Participants will discuss the similarities and differences between parent needs at the infant and toddler stages
  • Participants will be able to explain the components of a three part program with infant, toddler and parent support
  • Participants will be able to employ a curriculum for baby and toddler groups accompanied by supportive materials
