Keeping Our Youngest Children Safe: A Softer Approach to a Tough Topic

Our deaf and hard of hearing children are at a higher risk for child maltreatment, from babyhood to young adulthood. Most adults avoid the topic, resulting in a lack of awareness and understanding of maltreatment risk factors and prevention strategies. While conference presentations, newspaper articles, and Webinars help, the learning opportunities are simply too infrequent, too brief, and occasionally too disconcerting to effectively inform and involve parents (or the professionals who serve them) in maltreatment prevention efforts. This presentation will share how the design, creation and sharing of quilts can provide an informal, ongoing, visually rich, and emotionally comfortable context to discuss, learn, and share how to enhance the safety and success of our children. Participants will leave with strategies about developing their own quilting project, understanding the concepts of prevention, and evaluating their own expertise in identifying and reporting maltreatment in their role as parents or professionals.

  • Attendees will identify at least three maltreatment prevention concepts as illustrated on the quilts or in the presentation.
  • Participants will examine three strategies to develop a quilt for their own region to to share this information with parents and professionals in a visually rich, comfortable environment, whether in the design phase or during display and discussion. (Quilts may also be available on loan if this is not practical.)
  • Participants will evaluate their own level of expertise in identifying and reporting maltreatment in their role as parents or professionals.
