Coaching Families from a Growth Mindset

Support providers trust that families are capable of growing their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in order to make decisions appropriate to promote the development of their family and their child. Support providers often find that families are unfamiliar with deafness, are unsure of their abilities, and view the service provider as the professional with answers. Research demonstrates that coaching caregivers to develop their own strengths is the way to empower families to believe in and grow their own potential. Coaching from the concept of a growth mindset helps the support provider and family jointly develop a plan based on the family’s goals and strengths. Participants will use concepts from the theory of growth mindset during an interactive experience through activities to develop their family coaching techniques, including using active listening skills, and targeted language in specific scripts. The presentation will address knowledge gaps for new providers in the EDHI system to help build effective family support programs.

  • Use a growth mindset to develop a collaborative plan with the family based on their goals and strengths.
  • Practice supporting and empowering families through coaching techniques based on a growth mindset.
  • Demonstrate active listening skills to provide families with opportunities for discovery and self-reflection.
