Expanding and Improving Quality Early Intervention Services

There is a known shortage of providers for Early Intervention services for children with hearing loss, especially outside of urban areas. To address this shortage, the Moog Center for Deaf Education undertook a project to teach experienced EI providers how to implement real-time embedded coaching to parents of children birth to three to help them facilitate their children’s spoken language development. Real-time embedded coaching involves coaching parents on strategies for helping their child learn to talk during activities as they work with their child. Six speech/language pathologists and two teachers of the deaf participated in the program. They provided services to 20 families in six state throughout the U.S. All components of the training program for the providers will be described. Three workshops were conducted on-site at the Moog Center a) to learn and understand the rationale principle, and strategies for real-time embedded coaching, b) to provide hands-on practice implementing this approach to coaching parents, and c) to discuss challenges and successes of providing services online and share experiences and solutions. Other components included online mentoring of providers and evaluation of the children’s progress. Success of the provider training program was measured by the child outcomes and by parent comments, both of which will be reported. The effectiveness of training the Early Intervention providers through this program will be described through comments and feedback from the providers. The presentation will be presented through lecture and discussion

  • list objective evaluation measure for children in early intervention.
  • describe real-time embedded coaching as a tool for working with parents.
  • explain the components of a successful early intervention provider training program.
