Targeting the Social and Emotional Needs of D/HH Children through Early Intervention
Iowa’s Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) for D/HH Students targets eight areas: audiology, career education, communication, family education, functional skills for educational success, self-determination/advocacy, social-emotional skills, and technology. This presentation will incorporate portions of the social-emotional section of the ECC while exploring research findings related to the impact of family systems and communication on the social-emotional development of d/hh children. Social interactions beginning during infancy have an impact on social skill development and social competence. Participants will be provided with resources for assessing social skills and developing appropriate goals.

- utilize Iowa's Expanded Core Curriculum for Children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing to evaluate skills and develop appropriate social-emotional goals for early intervention, IFSPs, and IEPs

As the mother of a profoundly deaf daughter, Susan understands the challenges faced by children with hearing loss and their families. Susan’s professional focus shifted from mental health counseling in a clinical setting to D/HH family support.
As a follow-up program coordinator for Iowa EHDI, Susan served professionals and families. She was coordinator of the Iowa Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side (GBYS) program and currently serves as a national GBYS trainer.
Susan coordinates statewide experiences for students and their families which are based on the expanded core curriculum and works with a team overseeing the quality of educational services for Iowa's D/HH students.
She has authored presentations and facilitated workshops at the state and national level on a variety of mental health and parenting topics.

Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD)
John has served as the Assistant Administrator of ISD for 25 years, overseeing clinical psychological and social work services and the supervision of ISD students. He is a licensed mental health professional with a Specialty Certificate in “Early Education Professional Development Leadership” from Gallaudet University. He has taught American Sign Language and counseling classes at the local community college.
Previously John worked for the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services both as a claims adjudicator and in the area of job development/retention with deaf or hard of hearing adults.
He is a member of the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD) and serves on their accreditation team. John has presented at state and national conferences on the subject of behavioral and mental health of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
