One Deaf Child: Creating a New Future for Deaf Children
When Leah Coleman was diagnosed as deaf at 14 months of age, her parents asked, 'What does this mean for Leah's future?' The answer they received had them critically examine every bit of advice they received regarding Leah's communication options and her education.
Armed with little more than their belief in the unlimited potential of a child, every child, hearing or deaf, the Colemans charted their own path producing a new 'statistic' while discovering the power of communication. One deaf child can change everything.
Conflicting opinions on best methods of communicating with deaf children, and educating deaf children leave parents feeling overwhelmed, scared and helpless. It is time to come together and create a new future for deaf children.
- Execute at least twenty signs in American Sign Language.
- Differentiate between old wives tales in hearing loss and facts.
- Communicate with parents in ways that leave them empowered rather than fearful.

Rachel de Azevedo Coleman is an American musician and Emmy nominated actress. In 1998, Rachel and her husband Aaron discovered that their daughter Leah was deaf. In 2000 their daughter Lucy was born with spina bifida and cerebral palsy. In 2001, Rachel teamed up with her sister Emilie to create Signing Time! - a children's video series that teaches basic ASL vocabulary to children of all abilities. She produces, directs, and stars in Signing Time, Baby Signing Time, and Rachel & The TreeSchoolers.
Rachel is a mentor, an advocate and role model for families raising children with disabilities. Signing Time is often one of the first resources families seek out when they discover their child has hearing loss, Down syndrome, autism or communication delay.
