Extreme Staff Development Make Over: Creating Meaningful Professional Learning Opportunities to Improve Child and Family Outcomes

Despite the marvelous opportunities of newborn hearing screening and advanced technology, there is widespread agreement among researchers, clinicians, program administrators and policy makers that many children with hearing loss are not receiving the full benefit of these remarkable advances due to the lack of qualified service providers. The existing early intervention and educational infrastructure were developed at a time when most children with hearing loss were not identified until 2 to 5 years of age and cochlear implants were not available. University training programs for audiologists, teachers, and clinicians are not graduating the needed number of professionals who are equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to support children with hearing loss and their families. Today’s professionals have an immediate need to expand their knowledge and skills and work collaboratively to create changes that will provide comprehensive state of the art early intervention and related services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is time for an extreme makeover in staff development programs. This presentation will discuss in detail one proven model for professional education and training to improve outcomes for infants, toddlers, and children touched by hearing loss. It time for an extreme makeover!

Teresa H. Caraway, PhD., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, CEO of the Oberkotter Foundation, is leading the effort to help families ensure their children who are deaf or hard of hearing have opportunities to reach their full potential through listening and spoken language (LSL) as a foundation for literacy. She is the Founding CEO of Hearing First, and the Co-Founder and former Executive Co-Director of Hearts for Hearing. A LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist, Dr. Caraway served as the founding President of the AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language and as a founding board member of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance. She has previously served as a Director of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, AG Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language, and Auditory-Verbal International. She has been recognized by her peers for outstanding clinical skills. A former Course Director for the Institute for Cochlear Implant Training (ICIT), Adjunct Faculty at Salus University, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Dr. Caraway is an international consultant and skillful workshop presenter on teaching spoken language through listening.
