The Audiologist's Role in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Children’s Memorial Hospital has the highest level tertiary care Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in the state of Illinois. Children's Memorial Hospital is not a birthing hospital so we obtain all of our patients based on referrals from outside hospitals. Often newborns are transferred to our NICU within the first hours of life to obtain specialized medical care offered only at Children’s. Without having received their newborn hearing screenings at their birth hospital, the Audiology department at Children’s Memorial Hospital plays a vital role in completing newborn hearing screenings, as well as performing diagnostic evaluations and providing continued audiological management for those infants identified with hearing loss and/or are at risk for delayed onset or progressive hearing loss based upon their medical history. This population of newborns often presents with challenges related to the stability of their health, past medical history, and parental support. In this presentation, we will discuss the role of Audiology in the NICU and how our team meets the needs of these patients and their family. In addition, we will describe the challenges we have encountered in upholding the EDHI 1, 3, 6 guidelines in light of the medically complex patient population that we serve.

  • * discuss the challenges of audiological management with the NICU population * make appropriate recommendations for audiologic testing for NICU patients * discuss the challenges of adhering to the EDHI 1, 3, 6 guidelines with the NICU population
