Auditory Learning and Language Guide

Research has shown that the earlier a child is identified with hearing loss, fitted with an appropriate listening device and enrolled in early intervention services, the more likely that child will obtain age appropriate language abilities when she or he enters the first grade. Furthermore, the development of technology; digital hearing aids and cochlear implants has permitted children to learn spoken language through listening. Learning to listen in order to develop spoken language is a developmental approach, based upon typical developmental stages of normal hearing children. Children who have a hearing loss need the same listening, learning and language foundations as children who can hear, regardless of their chronological age. Auditory Learning Guides help us establish listening and language goals, plan therapy sessions, document progress, educate families and professionals and help us see the BIG picture. The ALLG (Auditory Learning and Language Guide) is a therapy tool that is designed on one page to help professionals and parents develop listening and spoken language. It covers five areas of auditory learning at four skill levels from beginning to advance. Activities and checklists are presented within each skill level. Specific listening strategies are provided and clinical examples are presented via videotape.

Sally Tannenbaum-Katsaggelos is Co-Director of the Pediatric Hearing Loss and Cochlear Implant Program at The University of Chicago Medicine, Comer Children's Hospital. She has been working with children with hearing loss for over 30 years and received the 1999 Helen Beebe Award for Outstanding Therapist. In addition, Sally is a Developmental Therapist specializing with children with hearing loss in the state of Illinois. She has contributed to several books on pediatric hearing loss and lectures both nationally and internationally.
