The Foundation of Every Relationship: The Importance of Caregiver/Infant Bonding
Babies are born. Typically, when a caregiver finds out his/her child is deaf, it immediately creates a barrier because many times, the birth of their child is the first time the caregiver has met a deaf person. A fear of the unknown and almost immediate grief then creates a distance between the caregiver and the child. Without this initial bonding experience, the child- deaf or not, will always struggle in both personal and professional relationships.
This workshop will illustrate the importance of bonding and attachment between parent/caregiver and the infant. The parent/caregiver and infant bond shapes the baby’s brain- which then leads to maintaining relationships, expectations of others, and development of self esteem. Strategies in appreciating the whole child and getting past the “DEAF” will be shared along with videos of and ideas for various bonding activities.

Jodee Crace graduated with a M.A. in School Counseling from Gallaudet University in 1988. Since then she has utilized her counseling degree and additional interdisciplinary studies in a variety of human development field as a developmental therapist with Indiana’s Part C agency, staff therapist at a Community Mental Health Center, as a school counselor and then as the Early Intervention Coordinator at the Indiana School for the Deaf. Currently, she provides consulting, coaching, and training services in Early Education and Family Support nationwide, including being a National Deaf Mentor Trainer and a state Parent Advisor Trainer, in which both utilize the SKI-HI Curriculums. Additionally, Jodee is an adjunct instructor with Gallaudet University’s certification program of D/HH Infants, Toddlers, and Families Collaboration and Leadership, along with leading Gallaudet's ASL Connect family resources. Finally, Jodee completed her service with the JCIH, representing Council on Education of Deaf.

Deaf herself, Madelyn is an Early Intervention Specialist with Outreach Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her roles include co-facilitating local and regional playgroups statewide, home-based family education services, and Deaf Mentoring. She is currently working on her Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from Indiana University. A southern girl, Madelyn is married to a Deaf Hoosier and they enjoy boating and spending time with their family and furbabies.
