Pediatric Audiology Learning Opportunities, Navigating EHDI from Home
Universal Newborn Hearing screening is going into its 2nd decade of implementation and there still is a shortage of Pediatric Audiologists able to serve infants identified at risk for hearing loss. This specialty interest of Audiology is difficult to fill, as it requires an individual attracted not only to the science but the art of the profession. The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) have been providing Pediatric Audiology Diagnostic and Amplification Courses for the last decade to Audiologists across the nation to provide theory and hands on training regarding Pediatric Audiology. The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) has developed a specialty certification in Pediatrics to not only increase the number of audiologists with this specialty but to better identify these individuals. The American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) has developed position statements regarding the role of the Audiologist with infants and children. The Joint Committee for Infant Hearing (JCIH) has developed a standard of care and continues to expand on the role of the Audiologist within the EHDI system. Finally, the Center for Disease and Control (CDC) has supported the development of a database of Pediatric Audiologists across the United States to improve access to these specialists for families with children at risk for, or identified with, hearing loss. With reduced funding for training workshops and the inability of Audiologists to leave their busy work settings, more Audiologists are turning to the internet. Web based trainings are becoming Audiologists best option for fine-tuning their skills from the comfort of their home. This presentation will focus on web-based resources available for the Pediatric Audiologist to expand their knowledge base in pediatrics and to navigate the often-murky waters of EHDI.
- Discuss new learning opportunities on the www.infanthearing.org website that will enhance their pediatric audiology practices.
- Identify 3 web sources that will provide evidenced based guidelines for Pediatric Audiology decision making.
- Choose family focused websites for their families with infants and toddlers who have hearing loss to enhance learning and compliance.

Karen Ditty is a pediatric audiologist with extensive experience and expertise in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs. Her career includes initiating newborn hearing screening and hearing aid legislation while implementing EHDI activities in Louisiana and Texas. She has been associated with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management for more than 20 years, and has worked on a variety of projects such as the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum and issues related to program quality, financing, and sustainability.
