Supporting Spoken Language Outcomes through Collaborative Partnerships
Early intervention programs nation-wide are faced with the challenge of serving increasing numbers of children, birth- age three, who are deaf and hard of hearing, whose families have selected a listening and spoken language approach and realizing that they do not have enough qualified providers to meet this need. Many providers may be comfortable working with toddlers, but express the need for additional support when working with infants and their families. The Colorado Home Intervention Program (CHIP) has partnered with the Listen Foundation to develop a comprehensive collaborative model that includes mentoring of early intervention providers, supporting families, developing resources, and providing trainings to close this gap and provide effective intervention statewide for families who have chosen a spoken language approach. A key component of this initiative is the establishment of the position of Oral Communication Consultant, a highly qualified professional who is available to mentor early intervention providers and supply consultation with individual families. Program satisfaction, from the perspecitve of both families and providers who have utiized this service, will be shared.

Dinah Beams is the program coordinator for the Colorado Home Intervention Program (CHIP), a statewide, in-home, family-centered early intervention program for families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing that is part of the Outreach Department of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB). Previous experience includes working as an Outreach Specialist at Beginnings for Parents of Children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing in North Carolina and as both a classroom and itinerant teacher in Colorado. Dinah is the author of the CHIP Parent Manual and the Curriculum for Sign Language Instructors, and co-developer of materials for the Integrated Reading Project, part of CSDB’s Early Literacy Development Initiative for young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Dinah also serves on the board for Colorado Families for Hands and Voices.

Nanette Thompson

Nanette is a an SLP and a LSLS Cert. AVT. She works closely with the Listen Foundation and the Colorado Home Intervention Program, University of Colorado Hospital, and Rocky Mountain Cochlear Implant Center providing diagnostic services and weekly speech, language, and listening therapy to families, children, and adults.
She also provides training and mentoring to professionals across the United States in the areas of parent coaching, auditory skill development, language expansion, and speech production.
