Enhancing Our Knowledge of the Deaf Mentor Program

Deaf Mentor Programs are available nationwide, however, they are still not very well known. There is a definite need to promote understanding of what a Deaf Mentor Program is and why it is very important for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their families along with the medical professionals they work with – to have this in their lives. The research has shown the POSITIVE impact it has toward Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, and their families. Deaf Mentor Programs are attempting to develop an interdisciplinary approach, with medical professionals, to promote knowledge of Deaf culture and the importance of using American Sign Language. The concept of the Interdisciplinary approach encourages a positive view of the professionals who work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. Also, it reduces the stress and the abundance of overwhelming information that the families may receive. During this presentation, there will be Deaf Mentor Programs that are already established will share information about implications of having a Deaf Mentor Program in place and how it impacts everyone involved from the deaf child to the family to the interdisciplinary team.

  • Becoming aware of what Deaf Mentor Program is about and remove any assumptions.
  • Understanding of how Deaf Mentor is critical to include as interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Learn about researches and data which supports the Deaf Mentor Program.

A dynamic educator, researcher, and presenter, Dr. Beth M. Hamilton specializes in early language and child development among deaf and hard of hearing children. She works as deaf/hard of hearing Educational Consultant around the nation. She holds a doctoral degree in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education from Lamar University and master degree in education and a bachelor degree in art therapy from Marylhurst University. She also has certifications in conflict and resolution mediation and early intervention.
