Early Literacy Foundations (ELF): An Early Years Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
It is never too early to introduce children to the printed word and to foster their love of books, reading, and learning. The Early Literacy Foundations (ELF) program at the Deaf Children’s Society of BC is a monthly program offered to parents with deaf and hard of hearing children 0-2. Deaf parents with hearing children also attend the program. Lead by a speech-language therapist and sign language instructor, the ELF program uses themed board books as a foundation for sign language learning, sound awareness through music, and play activities. Parents are shown how to read to their babies, what signs to use, how to encourage their child’s interaction with books, and many other skills to ensure their child’s learning and language development. Each attendee leaves with their own copy of the book to reinforce at-home reading and communication. The attendance of Deaf signing parents and their children creates a bimodal atmosphere and positive social networking opportunity for hearing parents developing their signing skills.
