Successful Strategies in Reducing Loss to Follow-Up/Loss to Documentation
Screening alone cannot assure that a child with a hearing loss will be identified in an appropriate time frame that will not affect the development of speech and language. Babies not passing the inpatient hospital screen will often need to go through a follow-up process consisting of a series of services involving multiple providers. Families going through this process are often challenged with complicating factors and barriers preventing the provision of timely services. Kansas has implemented several strategies over the past 5 years that have been an influencing factor in greatly reducing the state’s Loss to Follow-up by over 70%.
- Participants will be able to identify strategies that will help the EHDI programs reduce Loss to Follow-Up and meet or exceed Screening/Diagnostic/and Early Intervention Benchmarks
- Participants will be able to implement strategies into their EHDI programs and assure quality improvement.

Liz Schardine is the coordinator for the Kansas Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Program. She attended the University of Kansas where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Hearing and a Master’s degree in Audiology. She has worked with the newborn hearing screening program throughout the state for the past 21 years.

Kelly Barr is the Data Follow-Up Manager for the Kansas SoundBeginnings Newborn Hearing Screening Program. She has been employed with Kansas Department of Health and Environment since 2009. Kelly was previously the Hospital Newborn Hearing Screening Coordinator for Pediatrix Medical Group, Newborn Hearing Screen Program, at Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka, KS. She participated in the Sound Gene research study with Pediatrix Medical Group and Stormont-Vail to test blood for late onset hearing loss.
