My Relational Database is Smarter than Your Spreadsheet

Data collection and maintenance has long been recognized as an important component for a successful EHDI program. Commercial data tracking systems are available, but may not be an option for all hospital- based programs. For those needing a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) solution, use of a spreadsheet program is often the next option. This presentation will discuss the potential benefits of using a relational database instead of a spreadsheet to decrease data entry errors and increase flexibility for later data analysis. Additionally, participants will become familiar with how to plan for database construction along with preparation of existing data for import.

  • Restate benefits of relational databases in management of data, specifically related to newborn hearing screening programs.
  • Plan basic elements of database construction for use within their own setting
  • Describe how to import/export data within a database program.
