Engaging Parents in Auditory Verbal Education

In July 2007, the Alexander Graham Bell Academy announced a new certification program that upheld certification for Auditory-Verbal Therapists (AVT) and at the same introduced a new certification for Auditory-Verbal Educators (AVEd). Both designations are recognized as certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS) who work to meet the desired family outcome of listening and speaking for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Auditory-Verbal Educators often work in settings where the parents are not present on a daily or even weekly basis, but we are responsible for upholding the principles of Auditory Verbal Educators that directly state the importance of parent collaboration. This presentation will include a brief history of Auditory Verbal Educators and focus on three principles of Auditory Verbal Education that highlight the importance of parent involvement and the various methods that may help to engage parents in their child’s learning process. Time will be allotted for sharing of information among participants.

  • Participants will list possible avenues to engage parents in their center-based programs
  • Participants will discuss and share ways that they connect with parents so carryover to the home environment exists
  • Participants will gain a greater understanding of auditory-verbal education

Sherri Fickenscher, LSLS Cert. AVEd, is an Education Support Specialist at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech/Pennsylvania. She is responsible for staff and parent coaching and training. She mentors professionals seeking their Listening and Spoken Language certification and has presented at state, national, and international levels in an effort to improve listening and spoken language outcomes for children and families. Ms. Fickenscher is a contributing author to 101 Frequently Asked Questions About Auditory-Verbal Practice as well as Preparing to Teach, Committing to Learn and From Listening to Language. She is co-author of Auditory Verbal Strategies to Build Listening and Spoken Language Skills. Sherri is a member of the AGBell Association Board.
