Access to All Communication Modes for Toddlers at the Texas School for the Deaf
The Texas School for the Deaf has a 0-3 program that includes a daily site based component for the older toddlers. Beginning this past June, 2013, we have begun making changes to our toddler program in order to ensure that we can offer families support in the different options that must be available to families working with ECI. To that end, we have added a soundfield FM system to our Toddler Learning Center. We also hired two full time teachers/Parent Advisors this year with added specializations. One teacher has additional training to work with children who have special needs in addition to deafness. The other teacher has additional training to work with children who have auditory potential for listening and spoken language skills. We have a total of three teachers and all are also proficient in ASL. This is allowing us to ensure that we can offer all families options for varying communication modes in addition to ASL. This presentation would focus on the changes that we are making as well as the inherent challenges of trying to support all modes of communication in a program that is located on a campus that is bilingual-bicultural (ASL/English).

Mari Hubig
(Primary Presenter), Texas School for the Deaf, mari.hubig@tsd.state.tx.us;
Mari Hubig has been a Deaf Education teacher for 25 years, and 20 of those years have been dedicated to working with families with children in early intervention services (birth to three). In addition to Deaf Education, Ms. Hubig also has a background in Primary Montessori education. She is currently the Birth-3 Outreach Specialist at the Statewide Outreach Center at the Texas School for the Deaf. She provides both local and statewide trainings and support to both teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing and to early interventionists working with families of young children who are D/HH.
