EHDI DASH-Data Analysis and Statistical Hub
The collection of data is a core public health function that helps ensure the health and wellbeing of
children and adults across the world. However the benefits of collecting data can be severely reduced if
the information is not made available to stakeholders in an easily understood and meaningful way. With
this in mind, CDC’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Team (EHDI) developed the EHDI Data
Analysis and Statistical Hub (EHDI DASH), which provides stakeholders with a dynamic web-based
visualization tool to analyze and present state, regional, and national data trends in an visual, easy to
understand format. Specifically, the dynamic nature of this web-based tool allows EHDI programs and
other interested persons the flexibility to develop graphs, charts and reports that meet their individual
needs and highlight program achievements. EHDI-DASH is designed with an architecture used
successfully by other CDC programs and is capable of generating interactive reports for all jurisdictions
that submit data via the annual CDC EHDI Hearing Screening and Follow-up Survey.
This presentation will provide an overview of the EHDI DASH data analysis tools, with examples of
national and state/territorial reports that can be created using aggregate data submitted in the most recent
CDC EHDI Hearing Screening and Follow-up Survey. Charting options include comparison of data
between state and national averages in single and double map templates, time series charts with trend
lines, and animation showing changes over time. Analysis and display at the county or postal-code level
is possible if this data is collected by the state/territorial EHDI Program. The EHDI-DASH system is
intended to help state and territorial EHDI programs (a) better analyze their jurisdiction’s aggregated
data in order to make informed data-driven decisions and (b) disseminate more meaningful and striking
reports to inform and educate their stakeholders.
- The attendee will learn about EHDI DASH, a CDC project to improve the data analysis and reporting capabilities at the state and national level.
- The attendee will learn to use the functional tools available in the EHDI DASH system to create customizable dynamic web based and static data reports.
- The attendee will gain a better understanding of the “power” that comes from making informed data-driven decisions for programmatic activities.

Eric Cahill, MS has been with the CDC EHDI Team since 2009. As a Health Scientist, Eric provides technical assistance to state EHDI programs and investigates public health related issues for the team. Before coming to CDC, Eric served in the EHDI program for the state of Kentucky. He originally trained as a clinical audiologist and has worked at Temple University Hospital, Temple University Children’s Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston.

Marcus Gaffney

Marcus Gaffney is a Health Scientist and serves as the lead for the CDC EHDI Team. He has over 14 years’ experience working in the area of newborn hearing screening and is responsible for overseeing a range of activities, including supporting the development of jurisdictional EHDI Information Systems, assessing progress towards national goals, providing technical assistance, and supporting research efforts. He holds a Masters of Public Health from Mercer University.

Steve Richardson

Steve Richardson, MPH is a health educator with over 30 years’ experience including service in a state health department, an academic medical center and private consulting. He has worked in the areas of maternal and child health, injury prevention, environmental health and risk communication. At CDC’s EHDI program he is involved with special topics teleconferences and print and web-based/electronic information, helping state and federal colleagues apply human factors and marketing principles to their health communications, especially with family and professional audiences. In addition, he serves on CDC’s Public Health Ethics Committee.
