EHDI Collaborative Activities that Support Timely and Appropriate Early Intervention
The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing and other national organizations recommend that infants confirmed as being deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) following a failed newborn hearing screen be enrolled in early intervention by six months of age. State EHDI Programs are tasked with tracking and ensuring these guidelines are met for their residents. The Nevada EHDI Program will share several key relationships and jointly funded activities which have resulted in a high percentage of D/HH children enrolled in state-supported Part C early intervention programs. By working collaboratively with Part C, local early intervention agencies, and Nevada Hands & Voices Guide by Your Side program, as well as funding specific training and educational opportunities for these entities, enrollment in early intervention has surpassed the national average. The presentation will detail specific activities and their impact on timely early intervention enrollment, collection and sharing of relevant data by key players, and ancillary outcomes. It is our opinion Nevada’s successes may be duplicated or modified to produce similar reductions in loss to intervention in other states.
- Participants will be able to collaborate with their state Hands & Voices chapter to develop and utilize a Guide By Your Side Program.
- Participants will be able to identify and apply similar strategies to improve documentation and follow-up.
- Participants will be able to compare services in their state and then design relationships with appropriate stakeholders.

Perry Smith

Perry Smith has over twenty years of experience managing health and medical related programs and services within hospital/medical centers and in public health. He has been accountable for the fiscal management, business direction, program implementation, and human resources for these services ensuring efficient and effective performance. He has directed the work of clinical, non-clinical and professional staff to providing high quality client centered services. He has public speaking experience, addressing groups from youth, students, and medical professionals. He taught graduate and undergraduate level courses at the University of Nevada-Reno as an adjunct faculty. Mr. Smith has served on a variety of committees and boards ranging from a medical center institutional review board (IRB) to a prevent child abuse non-profit. He is currently the program coordinator for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program within the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health.

Diane Miller

Dr. Diane Miller is an experienced and dedicated professional with a strong background in infant hearing loss. She has over twenty years experience as a clinical audiologist, with most of this time spent working in an early intervention program with children under the age of three. Through this center she has provided a full line of diagnostic hearing tests including follow-up assessments for failed newborn hearing screens. Dr. Miller supports the public health needs of deaf and hard of hearing infants and toddlers through her work as an audiology consultant and Infant Follow-up Coordinator with the Nevada Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program. Dr. Miller was instrumental in establishing a loaner hearing aid bank for children and has served on several boards. She is currently on the Nevada Hands & Voices Advisory Board and the Nevada Newborn Screening Advisory Committee.

Cynthia Roller

Cindy Roller is the parent of a 10 year old son who is deaf. She is the Executive Director and Guide By Your Side Coordinator for Nevada Hands & Voices. The Nevada Chapter started in 2008 through a grant from the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program. Guide By Your Side services were added in 2012. Cindy was appointed as an acting parent on the Governors Commission for Communication Access in 2013 and also is the Parent Representative for the PepNet initiative on deaf and hard of hearing transition outcomes. In 2013 Cindy received the Regional IDEA Infant and Toddler Associations Parent Leadership Award and was recognized at the IDEA conference in Washington, D.C. In her spare time she likes to travel with her family and is excited about the acceptance of her son to the People to People Ambassador program to travel to Australia for 15 days in 2015.
