Reducing LTF: Do It the PDSA Way
Quality Improvement is a formal approach to the analysis of performance that ultimately leads to systematic efforts toward performance improvement. Small tests of change accelerate the rate of improvement. Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) is a method designed to assist testing a range of ways to see if a change strategy resulted in improvement. This presentation will outline 3 specific PDSAs targeted at reducing loss to follow up by involving the medical home and audiologists providing follow up diagnostic evaluations. Strategies, resulting in successful decreases in loss to follow up, will be scrutinized for the highest chance of sustainability, prior to spreading. Infants targeted in these PDSAs are in the category of “in process for audiological diagnosis”. These infants have failed the newborn hearing screening, have received at least one follow-up evaluation, but have received no final diagnosis (either normal or confirmed hearing loss). PDSA cycles, conducted with audiologists, tested strategies to decrease the number of babies LTF/D, due to being “in process for diagnosis” too long. LA EHDI partnered with medical home facilities to implement PDSA cycles targeting babies still in process for diagnosis. PDSAs tested ways to engage these stakeholders to become an active, vital and effective participant in the diagnostic process so that babies awaiting diagnosis did not become lost to follow-up. This presentation will show that EHDI programs CAN significantly improve needed follow-up services by engaging all stakeholders to contribute to the follow-up process and doing it the PDSA Way.
- Participants will be able to describe specific methods and activities for improving overall “loss to follow-up” utilizing the PDSA model as a quality improvement strategy.

Jeanette D. Webb, M.Ed, is the Follow-up Coordinator for Louisiana EHDI. She is responsible for developing partnerships with medical home facilities, home visiting programs, WIC clinics and works closely with audiologists and physicians who provide follow-up services. Jeanette serves on the NCHAM QI Advisory to provide consultation and technical assistance to other state EHDI programs.
