Human Care Requires Human Development: Focusing on the I in Interprofessional Collaborative Practice

Implementing interprofessional education and development is a task that begins during professional preparation programs and continues throughout a career. Essential to the developmental process is an understanding of human development, appreciating individual contributions, creating a culture of accountability, and establishing an ethic of care and commitment to human development. Development of the interprofessional skills necessary to promote positive family-centered care involves competency in the following domains: shared values/ethics, focused teamwork, effective communication skills, and clear articulation of roles/responsibilities. Current leadership constructs, human development principles, and professional development practices will be presented and aligned with the interprofessional collaborative competencies. Reflective and interactive processes will be incorporated into the learning experience with specific focus on developing the Individual.

  • Identify four interprofessional collaborative practice competencies.
  • Identify the barriers to implementing interprofessional collaborative practice.
  • Identify four resources supporting the development of interprofessional collaborative practice.

Catherine Carotta (), Boys Town National Research Hospital, cathy.carotta@boystown.org;
Catherine Cronin Carotta Ed.D., CCC-SLP is the Associate Director of the Center for Childhood Deafness at Boys Town National Research Hospital. She is a speech-language pathologist with many years of experience in the assessment and education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing using sign and spoken language modalities. Dr. Carotta has worked in public/private school settings, hospitals, and university-based clinical programs. With a doctorate in leadership education, she works to cre¬ate learning organizations using current leadership models. She has created a teacher renewal model entitled The Work of Your Life and has authored the work, Sustaining the Spirit to Teach, Lead, Serve. She is actively involved in providing consultation to organizations regarding leadership, renewal, and services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
