Advocacy Every Day: Parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

Parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children advocate for their children every day. We will review effective advocacy for parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children in various areas including: modes of communication, education, IEPs and 504 plans and public accommodations, as well as some of the more nuanced instances when parenting and advocacy intersect: technology, identity and community roles and relationships. No parent is immediately an expert on their newborn baby and there are learning periods for everyone. The parent of a Deaf or Hard of Hearing child continuously advocates. Our goal is to support parents in developing and strengthening advocacy skills. We are both parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. We are attorneys and were co-workers and close friends before we had our children.

  • Develop and strengthen parent advocacy skills.
  • Review Early Intervention, CPSE and CSE processes in terms of parental roles.
  • Support positive communication and relationships.
