From Triggers to Resilience: Raising a Child Who Is Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Historically, literature has focused on multi-step processes of grief that families experience upon learning their child's diagnosis of hearing loss (e.g., Kurtzer-White & Luterman, 2003, etc.) These complex feelings and thoughts can be "triggered"/ re-experienced throughout their child's life, particularly during developmental transition periods. The presenters will provide a structure for caregivers and associated healthcare providers to manage these periods of transition using examples from resilience (e.g., Ahlert & Greef, 2014) and positive psychology (e.g., Szarkowske & Brice, 2016) literature and evidence for use of parent-to-parent support (e.g., Henderson, et al, 2014).
- Learn concepts of concepts of complex grief and positive psychology that might be useful when raising a child who is deaf or hard of hearing
- Learn means of strengthening your ability (as a parent) to manage "triggers" and/ or "stressors" as they come along in your child's life, including parent-to-parent support
- As a professional, learn and understand how the above concepts and skills might support your work with deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.

Cheryl DeConde Johnson, Ed.D., provides consulting services for educational audiology and deaf education specializing in program evaluation and development and state deaf education service delivery and accountability systems through her practice, The ADE vantage. Previously she provided technical assistance and leadership in audiology and deaf education as a state consultant with the Colorado Department of Education. Cheryl has also been employed as a school-based audiologist, an early intervention provider, and a coordinator of a public school program serving deaf and hard of hearing students. She currently holds adjunct faculty appointments at the University of Arizona and Salus University. Cheryl is a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors for Hands & Voices. Cheryl has many publications including co-author of the Educational Audiology Handbook, 3rd Ed., and provides workshops and consultation worldwide.

Shawn Kalback

Dr. Kalback is a child psychologist who received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University. She currently works at the Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center located in central Maine. Dr. Kalback provides outpatient psychological evaluations and treatment to children and adolescents of all ages and their families, specializing in children who are deaf/ hard of hearing, and providing consultation to the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MECDHH). She has worked with children and adolescents with a range of developmental needs and their families throughout her career.
