Audiology 101 – Introduction to Audiology for Non-audiologists Working in and Supporting EHDI Activities
The vast majority of people working in and supporting EHDI programs and activities are not audiologists and do not have a working knowledge of the audiology concepts and terminology used in EHDI and early childhood hearing screening programs and activities. This presentation will present the basic audiology concepts and terminology needed to work effectively in EHDI programs, as well as for parents in understanding hearing loss and in navigating the intervention and habilitation process. Specific topics include how the different parts of the ear work, definitions and basic principles regarding hearing loss, and a summary of the most recent EHDI program reports of congenital hearing loss. This presentation will include a demonstration of hearing loss.

Jeff Hoffman currently manages the Tele-Audiology project with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) at Utah State University. Jeff was the Outreach Coordinator with the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative at NCHAM for seven years and an EHDI Network Consultant for NCHAM for two years. He also served as the program manager for the Nebraska Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program for six years. Jeff is the chair of the Hardin County (Iowa) Board of Health. He has served on the board of the Dimensions Educational Research Foundation since 2002 and was chair from 2006-2012. He also served as president of the Directors of Speech and Hearing Programs for State Health and Welfare Agencies in 2008.

Terry Foust, AuD., has implemented and directed large newborn hearing screening programs in Utah and Idaho. He has provided consultation services to the Maternal Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the HRSA Office of Performance Review (OPR), the Medicaid and Medicare Policy Research Center and the NCHAM. He is a National Technical Assistance Network audiologist for NCHAM providing support to state EHDI programs and the Early Childhood Hearing Outreach program.
International experience includes work and consultation in Accra (Ghana Africa), Costa Rica, Cairo Egypt, and most recently in Mumbai India.
Professional honors include being the first recipient of the newly established Mary J. Webster Distinguished Service Award from the Utah Speech-Language and Hearing Association, recognition by Utah Business Magazine as the 2007 Healthcare Hero of the year as an administrator, the 2006 recipient of the national Larry H. Mauldin award for excellence in audiology education and other honors.
